| For Shelter Belt Irrigation there are a couple of methods you can choose from, most commonly Drip Irrigation Halo's or Single Emitter Watering. Generally Shelter Belts are easy to install with the main problem being the length of the runf and size of main line tubing used. We usually recommend 1/2" tubing for runs under 500 ft and 3/4 for runs up to 1,000 ft, but you must also consider the water flow requirements for each run. For longer runs it's also recommend to feed the system from the middle of the line where possible to split the run length for each lateral run. Maximum GPH Flow Rate 1/2" Tubing - Approx. 250 gph 3/4" Tubing - Approx. 500 gph In this case with only 50 Trees to water, it isn't that much of a concern as each tree can be watered with either method without worrying about flow rates. OPTION 1 - Halo Watering (see below for single emitter option) The advantage of Halo Watering is the seedlings/trees in the Shelter Belt will get a complete watering around the root ball and the halo can be expanded as the tree grows for watering into maturity. The only consideration with Halo Watering is the flow rate calculation as the micro emitter tubing has an emitter every 6" or 12" (12" is most common for this application) each having a flow rate of .5 gph. For example for a 4 ft lengh of Halo you would require 2 gph. As mentioned above this wouldn't be a consideration for the 50 trees in this plan as there is plenty of capacity in either line. For this example we will use 3/4" tubing as the lenght of the run is 500 ft and the water supply will be fed from one end of the lateral line.

Additional Emitters can be added to the tree at a later time if desired. This method is commonly used on larger Shelter Belts as flow rates can be reduced down to .5 gph per tree to allow watering of more trees at one time. For this example we will use 2 gph emitters as flow rate isn't a big consideration.
